Women’s Health FAQ

There are a lot of reasons why women’s health care is so important. Women are challenged with unique health care obstacles and have a higher chance of being diagnosed with certain illnesses than men. Some of these include cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Some of these are leading causes for death among women.

A primary care physician and a gynecologist are doctors who have different specialties. A gynecologist is trained to focus primarily on women’s health. You go to see a primary care physician for immunizations and regular checkups. You also go and see your primary care physician when you are not feeling well. There are some primary care physicians who do provide routine care for gynecological needs such as pelvic and breast exams.

Your doctor will first ask you about your health history along with the health history of your family. There will also be a discussion about your sexual health and any concerns or questions you may have for the doctor can be addressed. If you are in need of any tests or exams your doctor will also explain in detail how the tests and exams will be done to make you less anxious.

If it is your first time seeing an gynecologist it is recommended for girls to see a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15. When it is your first time seeing a gynecologist a pelvic exam is not usually necessary. If you are experiencing any pain or anything that is out of the ordinary it is important that you see your gynecologist right away. Your gynecologist is also a great resource when looking for the right form of birth control that is best for you.

In any case prevention is better than cure. There are a multitude of injuries and diseases that are able to be prevented. They can also be managed much better if they are caught in the early stages. When you go for your regular check up with your primary care doctor, they will be able to assess your overall health and will be able to identify if you are at risk for any type of disease.
